“I Thought I Was Just Tired” Understanding Postpartum Depression in Nigeria
In Nigeria, when a woman has a baby, everyone checks on the baby. “Is the baby feeding well?” “Is the baby sleeping?” “Has the baby gained weight?” But almost no one asks the mother: “How are you really doing?” Postpartum depression in Nigeria is more common than we admit — yet many mothers suffer silently. Not because they are weak. Not because they are ungrateful. But because they don’t even realize what they are experiencing. They tell themselves: “I’m just tired.”
